A few days ago I found a nice ringtone for SMS notifications, but couldn’t find a way to use it on my HTC Magic (except using a 3rd party app from the store). After a bit of digging I got it:
On the SD card there must be a directory structure as follows:
sdcard
⌊media
⌊audio
⌊notifications
Every tone dropped in the notifications folder is visible from Settings → Sound & display → Notification ringtone.

Also, in /sdcard/media/audio/ you can create
ui
ringtones
alarms
Sounds placed there will automatically show up in the selection lists for these categories of events.
